Alternatives to the Gym

22/05/2014

We're not knocking the gym but, for those who struggle to get motivated when surrounded by an intimidating room full of Medieval torture style machines and ripped Arnie lookalikes, we look at the alternatives....

1. Insanity

The Insanity workout routines are high intensity workouts from Beachbody that let you transform your body in 60 days without the use of weights or equipment.

2. Yoga

Suitable for all ages and all fitness levels, exercising the mind as well as the body. Yoga will improve your flexibility and help you go beyond your normal range of movement, so you feel more comfortable during normal daily activity. What's not to love?

3. Pilates

Initially adopted by professional dancers in the US as an effective form of recovery after injury, pilates has steadily grown in popularity around the world, and includes celebrity fans such as Madonna and Jennifer Aniston.

4. Zumba

Since its inception in 2001, Zumba® Fitness has grown to become the world's largest - and most successful - dance-fitness program with more than 10 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages attending Zumba® classes in over 90,000 locations across more than 110 countries.

5. Parkour

With the aim to get from one place to another with precise movements that have the utmost efficiency with regards to both time and energy expended, it requires large physical demands by the body to perform these exercises correctly. Parkour has gradually been introduced into pop culture through appearances in movies, music videos, TV shows, video games, and finally in literature. A few examples where it can be seen are in the James Bond movie, Casino Royal, in one of Tony Hawk's skateboard video games and in Splinter Cell.

These ground movements combined with the techniques of stretching, flexibility and breathing of Hatha yoga, natural movements and the strength created through using body weight make up Ginastica Natural.

7. Boxfit

Boxfit classes are all-level circuit training classes which include a strength/cardio workout, boxing techniques, padwork, timed stations, music and lots of fun!

8. Belrobics

Belrobics is a belly dance inspired fitness programme like no other. It aims to inspire women of all shapes and sizes to have confidence in their own bodies whilst keeping fit. The roots of Belrobics are in Belly Dance which is one of the world’s oldest dances. It was especially created for women, by women, the movements within this dance working with the female form toning every muscle.
